Mitchell has literally "grown up" in the business, having worked in the stores as a young boy. His hands-on education has made him one of the retail industry's top merchants. Mitchell graduated Cum Laude from Boston University School of Management.

In addition to being actively involved in running the family business, Mitchell is the Chairman of the New York City Sports Commission appointed by the Mayor. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League (PAL), NYC & Company (Conventions & Visitors Bureau) and NRF (National Retail Federation). He also serves on the Advisory Board of Sports Trend Magazine and the Fashion Merchandising Management Department at F.I.T. (FMM), and on the Executive Committee for UJA Sports for Youth.

Mitchell is a member of the Young President's Organization (YPO), World President's Organization (WPO), Chief Executive's Organization (CEO), Friar's Club, Forum Club and Association For A Better New York (ABNY).
