- 1889 - First Store on Cortlandt Street in Manhattan
- 1920s - Morris has seven sons. One son, Henry, joins the business after World War I in the height of the Depression, he purchases, at pennies to the dollar, surplus World War I army clothing and equipment from the Federal Government - probably the largest closeout in merchandising history. Henry passes on the savings to his customers.
- 1945 - A Veterans Training Program is created, launching retail careers for many returning GI's. With the war over, the Government was again faced with surplus army clothing and equipment. Once again Modell's bought this merchandise from the government, passing the savings on to customers.
- 1946 - Bill Modell returns from World War II and joins the family business. With many returning soldiers moving to the suburbs to start families, Bill, a great merchant and visionary, realizes they needed a place to shop. Modell's Shoppers World, the first discount Department Store, is opened on Long Island.
- 1963 - Modell's acquires Davega Sporting Goods, a well-known sporting goods retailer in New York
- 1988 - Polly Brothers, a popular sporting goods chain in the Philadelphia market is bought. Six stores are opened.

- 1996 - Modell's acquires 15 leases of the former Herman's Sporting Goods chain. In August, a record 12 stores open in one day.

- 2003 - Modell's opens its 100th store!

- 2004 - Modell's takes New England by storm! Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire & Rhode Island stores open….

- 2005 - An exciting new store design is introduced. Store renovations begin!

- 2008 - Modell's opens 10 new stores

- Today - Modell's continues to expand as the "Hometown Sporting Goods Store" in every community we serve.
People have said that companies like this just don't exist anymore. It's comforting to know that there is still a company like Modell's... with a rich history and an exciting future.
